ABOUT TIBETAN MEDICINE
In Tibet, traditional medicine is called Sowa Rigpa, which means “the knowledge of healing.” Organized in the 12th century by Yutok Yonten Gonpo, it is a collection of holistic medical techniques from indigenous Tibet with influences from Indian Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and Unani medicine of Greece and Arabic cultures. Sowa Rigpa is a living tradition that continues to evolve and heal people to this day.
The universe and everything in it are all made up of the Five Elements: earth, water, fire, wind and space. This includes all people, plants, animals, minerals, and chemicals. Everything. So the foods we eat, the medicines we take, the environments we inhabit and the way we move through them all shape the elements of our own bodies and minds. Our individual typologies and pathologies——health and illness——are respectively built upon a personal balance or imbalance of these five elements.
Sowa Rigpa has preserved time-tested methods for maintaining health, preventing illness, and rebalancing our whole being when our equilibrium is disrupted. Its four part procedure of diet, lifestyle, medicinals and therapies is a most comprehensive way to correct all excesses, deficiencies and disorders. These are gentle, natural methods for restoring harmony in your life!
ABOUT YOUR VISIT
A session at Turquoise Wellness will involve a variety of approaches to address your unique needs.
For first-time clients, a personalized typology assessment is given to understand your elemental make-up. This shows us how your natural state of balance manifests through health.
Next (and for returning visits), we will make a pathology assessment. This may involve pulse reading, urinalysis, tongue and eye observation, body palpation, and in-depth questioning. This way, we get the most complete picture of the issue at hand.
Thirdly, I will provide tailored dietary advice and basic lifestyle coaching to assist you in finding your path back to balance, and comfort for the meantime. This could also include some spiritual suggestions and meditation exercises for those interested.
Then, if deemed necessary, we will explore appropriate medicinal formulae to promote your healing. Sowa Rigpa has a rich system of mostly herbal and mineral medicines for specific typologies and pathologies.
Lastly, we will determine if any external therapies would be helpful for long or short term relief. These range from acupressure, oil massage, warm and cold compresses, and a special treatment called horme, a kind of oil based warm compress. There may be some at-home therapies for you to do on your own as well.

ABOUT ME
Hello! My name is Joshua Nash, a trainee of Tibetan Medicine at the Sowa Rigpa Institute in Topanga, California. My background is a bit eclectic, if not eccentric. I came to the healing arts in the early 2000’s while studying folk medicine in Appalachia. During that time, I also completed a BA in Religious Studies, concentrating in East Asian religions, particularly Buddhism. My relationship with meditative practices spans over twenty years, with a focus on Tibetan Buddhist traditions since 2010. An interest in Sowa Rigpa began then, but only since 2022 have I been studying it formally under the guidance of Dr. Nida Chenagtsang and others. For the last eight years, my career has been in small-scale farming and regenerative agriculture, especially with Biodynamics and Korean natural farming. Other important pieces of my life include creative pursuits like music-making, painting, reading/writing, and communing with Nature. I live in the Mojave desert.
Let’s work together and get your health back in balance!
